Shooting at Beach 67th Street Leaves One Man Injured

Rockaway Beach, Queens — June 24, 2025
On a warm summer night meant for ocean breezes and boardwalk strolls, chaos erupted instead. At approximately 9:06 p.m. on June 24, a call to 911 prompted a swift response from officers of the NYPD’s 100th Precinct to Beach 67th Street and Beach Front Road, near the Rockaway boardwalk. Upon arrival, officers encountered a scene of confusion and panic, following reports of a shooting that left one man injured.

According to preliminary reports, two large groups had gathered near the beachfront area when a heated verbal dispute escalated into violence. Witnesses described a chaotic scene: shouting, pushing, and then, tragically, gunfire. Amidst the turmoil, someone produced a firearm and discharged at least one round, striking 40-year-old Mamadou Kante in the right shoulder.

Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene and rendered aid to Kante before transporting him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. As of Tuesday morning, Kante was listed in stable condition and is expected to recover. However, it remains unclear at this time whether he was an active participant in the initial confrontation or an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. Authorities have not released further details regarding his involvement, pending a full investigation.

Multiple witnesses were interviewed on-site, but no arrests have been made as of this writing. Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the shooter or whether the gun used in the incident has been recovered. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses and security cameras along the boardwalk is currently being reviewed.

The 100th Precinct has increased patrols in the area in the wake of the incident, seeking to calm nerves and prevent further violence as summer crowds continue to frequent Rockaway Beach. The NYPD is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or visiting the NYPD’s website.

Residents and visitors expressed a mix of concern and frustration over the gun violence at one of Queens’ most popular summer destinations. “It’s scary. You come here to relax, not to hear gunshots,” said Jasmine Ramirez, who was walking with her children on the boardwalk when the shots rang out. “This could’ve been any one of us.”

Community leaders are calling for increased security, conflict resolution programs, and youth engagement initiatives to help prevent similar incidents in the future. Local officials have also renewed calls for common-sense gun reforms as citywide efforts to curb gun violence continue.

As investigations continue, the community remains shaken but hopeful that justice will be served and that peace will return to the boardwalk.
