Police searching for suspect after his sisters stabbed, killed in Streamwood, friends say
A manhunt is underway for a suspect after his two sisters were stabbed to death in northwest suburban Streamwood Wednesday night, friends told ABC7.
A memorial continued to grow Thursday evening near the crime scene.
Police were sent to the 1600-block of McKool Avenue at about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday and found the two victims dead from the stabbing.
The victims were identified as Eyani Jones, 10, and Janiya Jenkins, 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. ABC7 learned the victims were sisters.
Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Jalonie Jenkins, who they said should be considered armed and dangerous. Friends of the victims told ABC7 he is the older brother of the two victims.
Anyone one with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911 and to not approach him.
Jalonie Jenkin’s last known location was in Bensenville.
Roughly 15 miles east of the Streamwood crime scene, authorities said they located the suspect’s vehicle in Bensenville’s Redmond Park Wednesday night. Investigators used drones, search dogs, and help from other law enforcement to search the park extensively, getting the attention of anxious neighbors.
“You just hate to hear when little kids get to be victims of crime. Very sad,” Bensenville neighbor Pete Carbonaro said. “To end up here in Bensenville from Streamwood is kinda strange.”
Chopper 7 was over the scene as dive crews were seen in a retention pond.
A fresh vase of flowers sat Thursday evening just a few feet from the perimeter of crime scene tape.
“She’s a really sweet girl,” said Sariyah Humphrey, a friend of a victim. “She’s very playful. She has a bright spirit.”
A poster board was newly filled with messages of sympathy for the two victims.
“My kids go to school with them, so they couldn’t even sleep,” Gabriela Morales said. “We were talking about it all night.”
A spokesperson for Parkwood Elementary School confirmed one of the sisters was a student.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of one of our students. We understand that we may have students and/or employees who are aware of the situation and may need support,” a school spokesperson said.
A nearby neighbor and family friend in Streamwood said she ran over to check what happened when the victim’s 7-year-old brother asked for help.
“I called the police and they’re asking me questions like, what’s the address, what happened?” she said.
The woman who does not want to be identified said her daughter was on the phone with her best friend, Eyani, shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday when she heard loud commotion in the background.
“She heard the screaming,” the woman said. “They were on the phone together and she was like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on at Eyani’s house, but can you look out the window?'”
Minutes later, Eyani’s younger brother came to the neighbor’s door asking that she call his mother, who was at work.
She did after walking over to see for herself the terror that unfolded.
“I walked up the stairs and I saw blood and stuff everywhere,” she said. “I see the oldest girl laid there, I see the little girl she’s laid out. I’m on the phone with the mom. I’m telling her, ‘Oh my God your kids are gone.'”
This woman’s daughter was the last to talk to the 10-year-old who just got began summer break last Thursday.
“I ain’t never witnessed nothing like this,” she said. “At the end of the day, this little girl has spent nights at my house. We even went to hotels together. This is my daughter’s best friend.”
“It’s just heartbreaking and it hurts real bad,” the woman said. “It hurts so bad so bad.”
Jasmine Marshall said she was close with 21-year-old victim Janiya Jenkins. She came to the house in Streamwood Thursday afternoon hoping to get more information.
“I’m hurt. I’m really hurt,” Marshall said. “She was a really good friend. A good friend.”
Investigators continue to search for Jalonie Jenkins as neighbors are living around a crime scene that’s rattled children and families who knew the young victims.
The Major Case Assistance Team and Streamwood police are now leading the investigation.
Parkwood Elementary is on summer break, but a crisis team will be available at the 10-year-old victim’s school from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday.
