On Saturday morning, May 24, 2025, a motorcyclist was fatally shot by a deputy in North Carolina after a high-speed chase ended in a crash. The incident occurred when the motorcyclist, identified as 23-year-old Camron Stephens of Jacksonville, was observed speeding over 100 mph in a 60 mph zone on U.S. 17 in Jones County. A deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Stephens failed to comply, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, Stephens lost control of his motorcycle on a curve, crossed the grass median, and collided with a section of wildlife fencing. He was pronounced dead at the scene
