Fresno Police Capture Suspect Wanted in Deadly Shooting Incident
FRESNO, CA – Authorities have confirmed the arrest of a man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that rocked a Fresno neighborhood earlier this week. The suspect, whose name has not yet been officially released pending formal charges, was taken into custody following an intense manhunt that lasted several days and involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
The deadly shooting occurred late Sunday evening in the 500 block of East Grant Avenue, a residential area typically known for its quiet streets and family-friendly environment. According to the Fresno Police Department, officers responded to several 911 calls reporting gunfire just after 9:00 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a male victim, believed to be in his late 20s, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators that the suspect fled the area immediately after the shooting, triggering a widespread search across Fresno County and neighboring regions. Surveillance footage and eyewitness statements helped detectives identify the suspect, who was reportedly known to law enforcement and had a prior criminal record, including firearm-related offenses.
The suspect was apprehended early Thursday morning during a coordinated operation involving the Fresno Police Department’s Tactical Team and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He was found hiding in a residence on the outskirts of town and was taken into custody without incident. Authorities said they also recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, which will be sent for ballistic testing.
“This arrest is the result of excellent police work and cooperation from the community,” said Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama in a press conference Thursday afternoon. “We were dealing with a dangerous individual, and thanks to tips from the public and the tireless work of our detectives, we were able to bring him into custody before anyone else was hurt.”
While the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that the incident may have been the result of a personal dispute or gang-related activity. Police have not ruled out the possibility that more individuals could be involved and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
The victim’s identity has also not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Friends and family gathered at the scene in the days following the shooting, leaving flowers and candles in memory of the young man who, according to loved ones, was working to turn his life around.
Community leaders and anti-violence advocates have responded to the incident with renewed calls for intervention programs aimed at curbing gun violence in Fresno’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. “This tragedy underscores the urgent need for more resources, more community engagement, and more investment in our youth,” said local activist Rosa Hernandez. “Every life lost to violence is one too many.”
The suspect is expected to be formally charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and other related offenses in the coming days. He is currently being held at the Fresno County Jail without bail. A court appearance is scheduled for early next week.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are encouraging the public to contact the Fresno Police Department or Crime Stoppers with any additional leads. In the meantime, city officials and local residents alike hope this arrest brings a measure of closure to the victim’s family and a reminder of the importance of community vigilance in the face of rising violence.
