On August 13, 2025, early in the morning, a fatal shooting occurred near Huntsville ISD, prompting several local school campuses to enact emergency lockdown and secure (lockout) protocols. According to KBTX, officers responded to a shooting on Essex

Boulevard around 8 a.m., where one person was pronounced dead on the scene and another seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital.

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Marquel Wiley, fled on foot into a wooded area toward FM 2821. He was captured and subsequently charged with capital murder, along with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Due to the proximity to the crime, Huntsville Elementary, Stewart Elementary, and other campuses—including Huntsville High, Mance Park Middle, Westmoreland Academy, the Transportation Center, and the Hawkins Administration Building—were placed under secure or lockout status as a precaution. Authorities lifted these procedures around 9:40 a.m. once Wiley was apprehended and an all-clear was declared.

HPD Chief Darryle Slaven thanked the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS, Walker County EMS, and Huntsville Fire Department for their joint efforts in apprehending Wiley.
