Greenwood, MS — The deaths of a mother and her young son, initially discovered during a welfare check earlier this week, are now being investigated as a homicide, according to Greenwood Police. Authorities confirmed Wednesday that 33-year-old Karon Clay and her 3-year-old son, Karter Clay, were found deceased in their home on August 4th around 10:17 a.m. in the 600 block of Greenway Street.
Karon, who was in the third trimester of pregnancy with a baby boy, was found unresponsive along with Karter inside their residence after concerned family members requested a welfare check. Responding officers made the tragic discovery shortly after entering the home. Police have now formally classified the case as a triple homicide, considering the unborn child a victim as well.
Circumstances Surrounding the Deaths
Investigators have not yet released the exact cause of death for either Karon or Karter. However, sources close to the investigation indicate that the scene raised immediate red flags for foul play. Authorities are awaiting final autopsy and toxicology reports from the state medical examiner to determine precise timelines and causes of death.
One of the most heart-wrenching questions facing detectives and the community is whether Karter was also intentionally killed, or if the toddler died days after his mother’s death due to lack of food, water, and care. Officials say both scenarios are being actively explored.
“We are treating this as a very serious and very delicate homicide investigation,” said Greenwood Police Chief Jody Bradley during a press briefing. “There are still many unanswered questions, and we are committed to getting justice for Karon, Karter, and the unborn child.”
A Family and Community in Mourning
The news has shaken the Greenwood community, a close-knit town where neighbors say the Clay family was well-liked and deeply rooted. Karon, described by friends as a loving mother and a kind-hearted person, was eagerly anticipating the birth of her second son.
“She was so excited to bring another little boy into the world,” said Tasha Williams, a close friend of Karon’s. “She loved Karter more than anything. To know that they were taken from us like this is unbearable.”
A small memorial of flowers, stuffed animals, and candles has begun to grow outside the Clay residence. Neighbors have organized a candlelight vigil for Friday evening to honor the lives lost.
No Suspects Announced Yet
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests have been made, and no persons of interest have been publicly identified. Greenwood Police say they are following multiple leads and have conducted several interviews with family members, friends, and neighbors. They are also reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area and asking for the public’s help.
Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious near Greenway Street between August 2nd and August 4th is urged to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 662-453-8477, or directly to the Greenwood Police Department.
“Someone out there knows what happened. We need the community to come together now more than ever,” Chief Bradley said.
Domestic Violence Not Ruled Out
While investigators have not confirmed a motive, law enforcement officials said they are exploring domestic violence as a possible factor, though they stopped short of providing any details. Karon’s family members shared that she had previously experienced a troubled relationship but had been working to create a safe and stable environment for her son and the baby on the way.
“Karon deserved better. She didn’t deserve to go out like this. None of them did,” said Monique Clay, Karon’s sister. “We want justice, and we want answers.”
A Community Left Searching for Answers
This tragedy comes at a time when Mississippi has seen a troubling rise in cases involving violence against women and children. Advocates are renewing calls for expanded resources for mental health, domestic abuse prevention, and community safety initiatives.
As the investigation continues, the Clay family is asking for privacy and prayers. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized, and a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with burial costs and to establish a memorial fund in honor of Karon, Karter, and the unborn baby.
