We here at NCRC are deeply saddened by the sudden and heartbreaking loss of McKenna Gardner. Though her time with us was short, the impact she made will be remembered for a long time to come.
McKenna recently volunteered with us during this year’s Heritage Festival and our beloved Rubber Duck Race. From the moment she arrived, it was clear that she brought more than just her time—she brought joy, kindness, and a willingness to jump in wherever help was needed. She had already expressed her excitement to volunteer again during our upcoming Halloween Parade—her favorite holiday. That fact alone spoke volumes about her spirit and sense of community. She didn’t just want to be involved; she looked forward to it with genuine enthusiasm.
What stood out most about McKenna wasn’t just her eagerness to help, but the way she carried herself—gracious, respectful, and always smiling. She had a quiet warmth that made her instantly approachable and easy to be around. Her artistic talents also shone through, especially in the whimsical sidewalk chalk art she created during the festival. Children and adults alike paused to admire her colorful, creative touch. It added a special, unexpected charm to the event—one of those little things that lingers in your memory long after the day is over.
While we only had the privilege of knowing McKenna for a short while, it’s clear to us that she was someone who left every place better than she found it. Her presence was uplifting, and her loss is deeply felt across our organization and throughout the community.
Our hearts go out to McKenna’s family and friends as they navigate this unimaginable grief. We share in your sorrow and hold you close in our thoughts. We also want to extend our hopes and prayers to the other individuals involved in the accident, and wish them strength, comfort, and healing in the days ahead.
McKenna, thank you for the time you gave us. Thank you for your kindness, your creativity, and your smile. You will be missed more than words can say.
With deepest sympathy,
The NCRC Team
