In Loving Memory of Mr. William Neil Utt
Mount Airy, North Carolina
September 14, 1952 – August 1, 2025

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that the family of Mr. William Neil Utt announces his peaceful passing at his home in Mount Airy, North Carolina, on the morning of Friday, August 1, 2025. He was 72 years old. Surrounded by his loving family in his final moments, William—affectionately known as “Neil” by many—left this world in the way he lived: gently, quietly, and wrapped in the love of those who mattered most.

Born on September 14, 1952, Neil was a lifelong resident of Surry County. He was the son of the late Carl and Virginia Utt, a family steeped in the traditions of faith, hard work, and kindness. From a young age, Neil demonstrated a unique ability to connect with people. Whether through his easygoing smile, warm handshake, or heartfelt stories, he never met a stranger.

Neil graduated from North Surry High School in 1970 and went on to begin a long and fulfilling career in the telecommunications industry. For over 35 years, he worked diligently for Surry Telephone Membership Corporation, where he earned a reputation as a loyal, knowledgeable, and dependable technician and co-worker. His calm demeanor and problem-solving nature made him a valuable part of the company and a trusted friend to many in the community. Even after retirement, his co-workers continued to hold him in high regard, often seeking his wisdom or reminiscing about stories from “the good old days.”

But Neil’s true legacy lies not in his work, but in the way he loved and lived. He was a devoted husband, a nurturing father, a proud grandfather, and a fiercely loyal friend. In 1975, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Sue (Thompson) Utt. The two shared a remarkable 50-year journey together—one marked by devotion, respect, laughter, and unshakable partnership. They built a home rooted in faith and love, raising two children who became the pride of his life.

To his children—Michael Utt and Sarah Utt Dixon—Neil was more than a father. He was a steady compass, a teacher, a role model, and a source of unconditional support. He cheered from the sidelines of their ball games, stayed up late helping with school projects, and taught them the value of honesty, humility, and hard work. His grandchildren, whom he adored with all his heart, will forever cherish the memories of fishing trips, backyard cookouts, and his legendary storytelling sessions.

Neil was also a faithful servant to his church and community. A longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, always eager to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement. His faith was quiet but deep—a guiding light that shaped every aspect of his life.

Those who knew Neil will remember him for his gentle spirit, his dry sense of humor, and his unwavering sense of integrity. Whether he was helping a neighbor fix a fence, volunteering at the church picnic, or simply sitting on his front porch watching the sun go down, Neil exuded a rare kind of peace. He found joy in the simple things: gardening, cheering on his beloved North Carolina Tar Heels, sharing meals with family, and working with his hands. He found purpose in serving others and left behind a blueprint of grace that will continue to inspire.

Mr. Utt is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Virginia Utt; his sister, Judith Ann Utt; and his grandson, Noah Dixon. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Sue Utt; son, Michael Neil Utt (and wife Melissa); daughter, Sarah Utt Dixon (and husband Mark); grandchildren, Lillian, Jonah, and Emma; brother, Robert Utt; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives he touched.

A celebration of Neil’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Airy. Pastor John Mark Taylor will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church or to the Surry County Hospice in gratitude for the compassionate care they provided in Neil’s final days.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that William Neil Utt has now entered into eternal peace—reunited with loved ones gone before and cradled in the arms of his Savior. His life was a testament to quiet strength, steady love, and faithful service, and the echoes of his kindness will live on in all who had the blessing of knowing him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23
