In Loving Memory of George Kooymans: A Rock Legend Gone Too Soon

We are deeply saddened to report the passing of George Kooymans, the legendary guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of the iconic Dutch rock band Golden Earring. George passed away after a courageous and deeply personal battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) — a progressive and unrelenting neurodegenerative disease that ultimately affects the ability to move, speak, and breathe. He was 77.

George’s journey was not just one of extraordinary musical talent, but also one marked by resilience and passion. Even as his health declined, he remained a symbol of strength, humility, and authenticity. His fight against ALS was met with grace and dignity, surrounded by loved ones who stood by him as he faced one of life’s greatest challenges.

As one of the creative forces behind Golden Earring, George Kooymans left an indelible mark on the world of rock music. Best known for the international hit “Radar Love”, a song that has stood the test of time as a staple of rock radio and driving anthems, George’s songwriting brilliance and electric guitar riffs became the heartbeat of a band that spanned decades and inspired generations.

Golden Earring was more than a band—it was a cultural movement in the Netherlands and beyond, with George’s guitar work and vocals forming the backbone of their distinct and powerful sound. Whether on stage in front of thousands or recording in the studio, George brought a magnetic energy that helped define not just an era, but a musical legacy that continues to resonate worldwide.

His work extended beyond Golden Earring as well—George was also a producer, songwriter for other artists, and a solo performer in his own right. His talent and creativity knew no boundaries, and his influence could be felt in every chord he played.

George Kooymans was not only a remarkable musician, but also a beloved husband, father, friend, and colleague. Those who knew him personally remember a man of quiet strength, gentle humor, and generous spirit. He was fiercely loyal to those he loved, and despite the fame he achieved, remained grounded and humble.

The announcement of his diagnosis with ALS in 2021 was met with an outpouring of love and support from fans and fellow musicians across the globe. Though it led to the heartbreaking retirement of Golden Earring after nearly 60 years, the band—and especially George—was celebrated for a legacy unmatched in Dutch rock history.

As we reflect on his passing, our hearts go out to his family, his bandmates, and all who were touched by his music and his story. The Farmington Hills Police, who were reportedly involved in assisting at the scene of George’s passing, have extended their condolences as well, and the investigation into the exact circumstances continues. However, it is clear that this loss was due to the relentless progression of a cruel disease that took one of rock’s greatest.

George Kooymans leaves behind a world forever changed by his music, his artistry, and his courage. His strings may have gone silent, but his songs will echo forever in the hearts of millions.

Rest in peace, George.
Your spirit lives on in every note, every lyric, and every soul you’ve touched
