A young mother is fighting for her life after she was shot five times inside her apartment, shielding her 6-year-old son from the gunfire.
Loved ones say Cait Schott was in bed watching TV with her little boy, Ollie, when a man kicked in their front door and opened fire. As the bullets flew, Cait pushed Ollie under the bed to protect him, using her own body as a shield. Her family says Ollie begged the gunman not to hurt his mom.
The shooter, identified by police as 60-year-old Brian Medley, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators say he knew Cait, and neighbors say they had worked together and he was obsessed with her.
Cait was airlifted to USA Trauma Center in Mobile and has already undergone multiple surgeries. Her mother, Allyson Marshall, says three bullets struck her daughter in the chest. One shattered the bone in her arm. Another passed through her liver. By what doctors are calling a miracle, her heart and lungs were spared.
She remains in critical condition and faces a long road to recovery, physically and emotionally. Her family says she’ll need around-the-clock care for months.
Cait is a single mother who works three jobs to support her son. Now, that strength is being poured into healing. Her family is asking for prayers and support as she continues to fight for her life, and for her little boy, who witnessed the unimaginable.
Cait’s mom says she has no doubt her daughter will pull through, because her will to live for Ollie is stronger than anything else.
