In memory of Jose Grinan

José Griñán, a revered figure in Houston journalism and a beloved former FOX 26 anchor, passed away at the age of 72. His death was announced by FOX 26 on May 26, 2025. Griñán’s warm presence and storytelling prowess made him a household name in Houston over his 30-year tenure at the station.

Born in Tampa, Florida, Griñán began his media career as a documentary cinematographer for the U.S. Army. In 1975, he transitioned to broadcast journalism with his first anchor role at KTSM in El Paso, Texas. His career spanned several major markets, including Tampa, Miami, New York, and Dallas, before he joined FOX 26 in 1993 as the station’s first male morning show anchor. He covered significant events such as the Branch Davidian siege in Waco and numerous hurricanes, always delivering news with professionalism and empathy.

Beyond the newsroom, Griñán was deeply committed to community service. He supported organizations like the National Kidney Foundation, Special Olympics, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He also served on the boards of the Dive Pirate Foundation, Houston Read Commission, and Keep Houston Beautiful. A proud Cuban-American, he was affiliated with both the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists

Griñán retired from FOX 26 in June 2023 after taking medical leave in the fall of 2022. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Griffin Townsend Griñán, and their two daughters. His legacy endures through the countless lives he touched and the stories he told throughout his distinguished career.
