PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Heartbreak has struck the Port St. Lucie community after the body of 13-year-old Roger Rivera was discovered in a body of water just a short distance from his home.
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD), Roger was reported missing Sunday afternoon after last being seen around 2 p.m. near the 11000 block of SW Macelli Way. His disappearance immediately prompted a large-scale search involving police officers, neighbors, and concerned community members.
Roger was non-verbal and had the mental capacity of a toddler, which made the search all the more urgent. Authorities stressed that his vulnerabilities placed him at heightened risk, and time was critical in locating him.
Sadly, despite the swift and determined efforts to find him, Roger was located lifeless in the water close to his home. Details about how he entered the water have not yet been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
News of his death has devastated those who knew him. Neighbors described Roger as a sweet, gentle child with a radiant smile, and family friends recalled his love for simple joys — a favorite toy, a sunny day outside, or the comfort of familiar faces.
“This is a tragedy no family should ever endure,” a PSLPD spokesperson said in a statement. “Our hearts are with Roger’s family during this unimaginable time.”
Local residents have already begun leaving flowers, candles, and stuffed animals near the site of the search, creating a makeshift memorial in his honor. Counselors and grief support services are also being offered to neighbors and friends impacted by the loss.
For now, Port St. Lucie grieves together, mourning a young life cut far too short and holding Roger’s family in prayer. While his absence leaves an aching void, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
