Omaha, NE – The Omaha Police Department is investigating a devastating crash that claimed two young lives and left several others seriously injured on Friday afternoon. The collision occurred at the intersection of Interstate 680 and Pacific Street, bringing a heartbreaking scene to an otherwise routine day.
Authorities say a westbound Chevrolet Silverado collided with a Toyota Highlander that was turning onto the northbound I-680 on-ramp. The force of the impact pushed the Highlander into a nearby pole, causing catastrophic damage to the SUV and trapping multiple occupants inside.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite their best efforts, a 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were pronounced dead at the site. A 6-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Four additional victims from the Highlander sustained serious injuries and remain under medical care.
The driver of the Silverado suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Police have not released the names of those involved as they work to notify families.
The intersection was closed for several hours while crash investigators documented the scene, collected evidence, and interviewed witnesses. Authorities have not yet said whether speed, impairment, or other factors played a role in the collision.
“This is an incredibly tragic incident with an unimaginable loss for these families,” said an Omaha Police spokesperson. “We are committed to finding out exactly what happened and will provide updates as our investigation continues.”
The Omaha Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to come forward.
As the community reels from this heartbreaking loss, thoughts and prayers are pouring in for the victims, their loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy.
