Tragic Loss in Houston: Two FAMU Graduates Killed by Alleged Impaired Driver While Walking Home

HOUSTON, TX – August 2, 2025 — What should have been a weekend of celebration, unity, and fellowship turned into a devastating tragedy when two recent Florida A&M University (FAMU) graduates and fraternity brothers were struck and killed by an allegedly impaired driver early Saturday morning in Midtown Houston.

Jayden and Ronnie Burns II, both 22 years old, were best friends, fraternity brothers in Kappa Alpha Psi, and recent graduates of the prestigious historically Black university. Their lives were filled with promise, their spirits were vibrant, and their futures were just beginning to unfold. But in a heartbreaking moment, their stories were cut short.

According to Houston police, the incident occurred near Smith Street as the two young men were walking back to their Airbnb after enjoying the Texas Greek Picnic—a widely attended annual gathering of historically Black fraternities and sororities that celebrates culture, scholarship, and brotherhood. It was supposed to be a joyful and memorable trip—one last summer celebration before the next chapter in their lives.

Authorities say the suspect, whose name has not been publicly released, was being pursued by police for reckless driving and was allegedly under the influence when he lost control and fatally struck the two pedestrians. The driver has since been taken into custody and is expected to face multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter.

Witnesses at the scene described a horrifying and chaotic moment—screeching tires, flashing lights, and then silence. The community, both in Houston and back in Tallahassee, is reeling from the sudden loss.

Jayden, a brilliant and compassionate scholar, had recently earned his degree and was preparing to continue his studies abroad in Germany, where he planned to pursue a graduate degree in international affairs. Known for his intellect, humor, and kindness, Jayden had dreams of becoming a global changemaker—building bridges across borders and cultures.

Ronnie Burns II had just secured a new job in business and was excited to begin his career. Friends and family describe him as driven, humble, and fiercely loyal. His energy lit up every room he entered, and his passion for mentorship made him a beloved figure among younger fraternity brothers and peers.

Both young men were deeply involved in campus life at FAMU and were respected leaders within Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Their bond as best friends went beyond brotherhood—they were inseparable, motivating each other to push harder, dream bigger, and never forget their roots.

The news of their deaths has sparked a wave of grief throughout the FAMU community and beyond. University officials, fraternity members, and students have shared their condolences and memories of Jayden and Ronnie on social media, describing the duo as “exceptional,” “visionary,” and “the kind of young men you’d be proud to call your sons.”

A candlelight vigil is being planned at FAMU’s Eternal Flame to honor their memory, and tributes are pouring in from alumni chapters across the country. The Houston chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi has also pledged to support the families during this unimaginable time of loss.

Their deaths raise painful and urgent questions about reckless driving, police pursuit policies, and the senselessness of impaired driving. Two lives, brimming with promise, were stolen in an instant—leaving behind broken families, devastated friends, and a fraternity mourning its own.

As their families begin the difficult process of making arrangements to bring their sons home, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of one person’s reckless decision.

We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to the families of Jayden and Ronnie Burns II, their loved ones, their FAMU family, and the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. May their memory be a blessing, and may their legacy of excellence, friendship, and brotherhood never be forgotten.

Rest in power, Jayden and Ronnie.
Your light will continue to shine through every life you touched. 🕊️❤️
