With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Stephen “Steve” Paul Burns, a devoted public servant, loving husband, cherished friend, and proud veteran. Steve, age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025, after a courageous battle with heart disease. He was surrounded by the comfort of his family and loved ones at the time of his passing in Delray Beach, Florida, where he had spent his retirement years.
Steve was born on August 28, 1948, in Rumford, Maine, to a hardworking family that instilled in him the values of duty, resilience, and compassion from a young age. After graduating from high school, Steve chose a path of service and joined the United States Army, answering the call to duty during the Vietnam War. His time in the military shaped his commitment to protecting others and inspired a lifelong dedication to public service.
Upon returning home, Steve continued his service by joining the National Guard, and soon after, he found his calling in law enforcement. He proudly served the City of Auburn, Maine, as a Patrol Officer, where he built a career marked by integrity, bravery, and compassion. Officer Burns became a pillar of the Auburn Police Department, known for his steady presence, strong moral compass, and willingness to go the extra mile for his colleagues and community.
Throughout his tenure, Officer Burns was not just a law enforcement professional—he was a friend and mentor to many. His calm demeanor, wisdom, and genuine care made him beloved among his fellow officers and the citizens he served. He handled each situation, whether routine or critical, with fairness and heart, earning the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
After his retirement, Steve and his beloved wife, Patricia “Patty” Sanville, relocated to Delray Beach, Florida, where they embraced the joy of retirement with the same grace and warmth they had brought into their years together. Whether spending peaceful days near the water, visiting with friends and family, or reminiscing about his time in service, Steve found meaning in the little things and always prioritized connection and kindness.
Those who knew Steve remember him as a man of great humility, quiet strength, and unwavering loyalty. He was a proud American, a loving husband, and a guardian of his community. His legacy lives on not only in the years he gave to Auburn, but in the lives he touched through his steady example of service, sacrifice, and compassion.
We extend our deepest condolences to Patty, their extended family, his many friends, and the Auburn Police Department family. Though his passing leaves a great void, we take comfort in knowing that Steve’s spirit endures in the memories we hold dear and the lessons he imparted through a life well-lived.
Rest in peace, Officer Stephen P. Burns. Your watch has ended, but your legacy of honor, duty, and love will carry on forever. Thank you for your unwavering service. You will be dearly missed.
