In Loving Memory of Beryll “BJ” Yates-Heiferman
Devoted Animal Advocate, Cherished Sister, Beloved Friend
April 14, 1961 – August 1, 2025

With deep sorrow and heartfelt remembrance, we announce the passing of Beryll “BJ” Yates-Heiferman, a compassionate soul whose life’s purpose revolved around love, kindness, and unwavering service to others—both human and animal alike. BJ passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at her home in Homewood, Illinois, surrounded by the quiet comfort of the life she built with love and purpose. She was 64 years old.

BJ was, in every sense of the word, a protector—a fierce, funny, and empathetic woman who devoted her life to the voiceless and the vulnerable. A lifelong animal rescue advocate, BJ’s journey in rescue work was not just a calling; it was an extension of who she was. She gave her time, energy, and heart to animals in need, and in doing so, she changed countless lives—both furry and human.

Though her love for animals defined her public legacy, BJ also cultivated a successful career as a legal secretary, bringing professionalism, wit, and sharp intelligence to her work. Her colleagues admired her for her calm under pressure, her generous spirit, and her ability to infuse even the busiest workday with laughter.

Later in life, BJ combined her logistical skill and passion for rescue by becoming a transport driver for rescue animals, ensuring their safe passage to loving homes, shelters, and foster families across the region. Her dedication to this often-unseen work helped secure the future for hundreds of animals. Many of these animals might not have made it without BJ’s persistence and care. She gave them hope—and often, a second chance at life.

BJ’s heart was as big as her laugh—warm, genuine, and instantly comforting. She had an unmatched ability to connect with others, putting people at ease with her humor, empathy, and authenticity. Friends and family remember her not only for the way she loved animals, but also for the way she loved people—deeply, unconditionally, and with enduring loyalty.

She leaves behind a family who adored her and who will miss her fiercely. BJ is survived by her beloved sisters, Barbara (David) Slivnick and Beth Hunter; her extended family through marriage, Kenneth (Kim) Heiferman, Beth Heiferman, Gary Heiferman (Paul Buenvenida), Scott Heiferman, and Darren Hunter; and her cherished nieces and nephews: Jeremy (Sarah) Slivnick, Elyssa Slivnick, Daniel (Holly) Heiferman, Michael Heiferman, Jeffrey Heiferman, Lila Jane Heiferman, and Wyatt Heiferman.

To her family, BJ was a guiding light—a shoulder to lean on, a voice of reason, a relentless supporter, and the person who always showed up with love. To her friends, she was a confidante and an inspiration. To every animal she rescued, transported, or soothed in its final hours, she was a guardian angel.

In honoring BJ’s life, let us remember her not only through tears, but through acts of compassion. Whether it’s rescuing a stray, volunteering time, making a donation in her memory, or simply being kind—these are the tributes BJ would have cherished most.

Her legacy is one of love, service, and strength, and though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit continues to shine through every life she touched.

Rest peacefully, BJ. Thank you for everything.
