Family Identifies Victim in Deadly Overnight Shooting: Isaac ‘Ike’ Cunningham

ROANOKE, VA — A grieving family is once again faced with unimaginable loss as they confirm the identity of the victim in a deadly overnight shooting in Roanoke.

43-year-old Isaac “Ike” Lamonte Cunningham was tragically shot and killed just after midnight early Sunday morning, in the 200 block of 12th Street SW. Roanoke Police say officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 12:28 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members have now confirmed that the victim is Ike Cunningham — a father still mourning the loss of his 15-year-old son, also named Isaac, who was shot and killed in June of last year. In just over a year, the Cunningham family has now lost both father and son to gun violence, casting a somber and heartbreaking shadow over the community.

The death of Ike Cunningham is not just another statistic; it is the loss of a father, a friend, a neighbor, and a man who had already endured profound grief. Community members who knew him say Ike had struggled deeply with the pain of losing his son and had been trying to piece together a life after tragedy.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Police have not yet made any arrests, and no suspect information has been released. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led up to the deadly encounter.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward. Those with tips are encouraged to contact the Roanoke Police Department at 540-344-8500. Calls can remain anonymous.

As the Cunningham family navigates this new wave of heartbreak, they are now preparing to bury another loved one — a second senseless loss to gun violence in just over a year. Community leaders are calling for support, accountability, and renewed efforts to end the cycle of violence that continues to claim lives and devastate families in Roanoke and beyond.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
