JUST IN: Mt. Vernon Man Arrested and Charged in Connection to Sunday’s Shooting

Mount Vernon, IL — Authorities in Mt. Vernon have announced significant developments in connection to a recent shooting that rattled the community on Sunday evening. According to a statement released by the Mt. Vernon Police Department, 26-year-old Jamaro J. Kemmerling, a resident of Mt. Vernon, has been formally charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Repeat Felony Offender.

The charges stem from an incident that unfolded Sunday, when Mt. Vernon police responded to multiple reports of gunfire in a residential area. Officers arrived at the scene to find shell casings scattered near the roadway and evidence indicating that shots had been fired in the direction of an occupied vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the violence prompted a swift and thorough investigation by local law enforcement.

Detectives quickly began piecing together surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence. Their efforts led them to identify Kemmerling as a suspect, and he was taken into custody without incident during the early hours of Monday morning. Authorities have confirmed that the firearm believed to be used in the shooting has since been recovered.

Kemmerling is no stranger to law enforcement. According to court records, he has a history of felony convictions, which makes his current possession of a firearm not only unlawful but particularly concerning for investigators and community members alike. His status as a repeat felony offender has elevated the severity of the charges now pending against him.

“Gun violence is unacceptable, and we are committed to holding those accountable who choose to endanger our neighborhoods,” said Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page. “This arrest is the result of outstanding collaboration between our officers, detectives, and community members who stepped up to share crucial information.”

The case has been forwarded to the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office, and prosecutors are expected to pursue the charges with full weight. Kemmerling made his initial appearance before a judge on Tuesday, where his bond was set at $500,000. He remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail.

Community reaction to the arrest has been a mix of relief and continued concern. Several residents expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in the shooting, while others urged for more proactive measures to prevent such violence in the future. The shooting occurred just blocks away from schools and local businesses, adding to the community’s alarm over rising incidents of gun violence.

“Too often, we’re hearing about young men who are involved in these kinds of crimes, and we need to be doing more — as a city and as a society — to prevent this,” said local resident Angela Reed. “I’m thankful the police made a quick arrest, but I also hope this serves as a wake-up call.”

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s shooting remains active. Police have not yet ruled out the possibility that others may have been involved or that the incident may be connected to broader criminal activity in the area.

Authorities are continuing to urge anyone with information about the case to contact the Mt. Vernon Police Department or submit tips anonymously through Jefferson County Crime Stoppers.

As of now, Jamaro J. Kemmerling faces serious legal consequences, and if convicted on both counts, he could face an extended prison sentence due to his prior felony record. His next court appearance is scheduled for later this month.

The Mt. Vernon Police Department has reiterated its commitment to protecting residents and curbing gun violence through both enforcement and community engagement. In the meantime, they are asking the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to help keep neighborhoods safe.
