It is with broken hearts and immeasurable sorrow that the family of Bryson Burns announces his unexpected passing on Monday, July 28, 2025, just three days before what would have been his 18th birthday. Born on July 31, 2007, in Lexington County, South Carolina, Bryson was a vibrant young man who called Batesburg-Leesville home his entire life. His loss has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, schoolmates, teachers, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bryson was a beacon of light in his community — known for his wide smile, infectious laugh, and a heart full of compassion. From a young age, he displayed a spirited curiosity and a fierce determination to make his mark on the world. Whether he was helping a neighbor, cracking a joke to lighten the mood, or pushing himself to improve in school or sports, Bryson always gave his all.

A student at Batesburg-Leesville High School, Bryson was set to begin his senior year this fall. He was not only an engaged student but also a beloved member of the school’s football team. His coaches often described him as a dedicated teammate who led by example, always showing up early, working hard, and encouraging those around him. On the field, he played with heart and grit; off the field, he was the kind of young man everyone could count on.

Bryson had dreams of attending trade school after graduation, with aspirations to start his own business someday. He had a natural talent for working with his hands and spent many weekends helping his grandfather repair old engines, remodel rooms, or fix whatever needed fixing. His work ethic was remarkable, and his desire to provide for his family was already taking root in everything he did.

More than anything, Bryson was known for his love for his family. He was the proud big brother to two younger siblings who adored him, often stepping into a protective, nurturing role beyond his years. He had a close bond with his mother, who described him as her rock — someone who always looked out for her and others with unwavering loyalty. He never ended a phone call or left the house without saying, “I love you.”

Bryson also found joy in music — often blasting his favorite songs in the car with friends or writing lyrics in his notebook. He had a quiet creative side that not everyone got to see, but those who did knew it was something special. He loved life’s little moments: bonfires with friends, sunsets over the football field, and late-night talks under the stars.

The sudden and tragic nature of Bryson’s passing has shaken the community to its core. He was a young man on the cusp of adulthood — full of promise, hope, and an unshakable spirit. Though his time with us was far too short, the impact he made will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Bryson is survived by his loving mother, Katrina Burns; his younger brother Jaylen and sister Amaya; his grandparents, Patricia and Ronald Burns; his uncle Derrick, aunt Shanice, and many cousins, teammates, and close friends who considered him family. He was preceded in death by his father, Brandon Hill, whom he spoke of often and dearly missed.

A celebration of Bryson’s life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM at First Missionary Baptist Church in Batesburg-Leesville. Visitation will take place the evening before, Friday, August 1, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Milton Shealy Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Twin City Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bryson’s honor to a scholarship fund being established at Batesburg-Leesville High School to support students pursuing vocational training — a cause close to Bryson’s heart.

Though our hearts are heavy, we choose to remember Bryson for the love he gave, the light he brought, and the legacy he leaves behind. Rest easy, Bryson. You will forever be remembered, cherished, and missed. 💙
