RCOC Mourns Loss of Staff Member in Tragic Orchard Lake Road Crash
FARMINGTON HILLS, MI — A wave of deep sorrow has enveloped the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) following a devastating work zone crash this morning that claimed the life of one dedicated employee and left two others seriously injured. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 11:10 a.m. while the crew was conducting routine maintenance on a drainage basin on northbound Orchard Lake Road, just south of 11 Mile Road.
According to initial reports, a vehicle traveling southbound veered across the center median and collided with the RCOC workers, who were actively engaged in a clearly marked and secured work zone. Despite all proper safety measures being in place, the unexpected and violent nature of the crash brought about consequences that no one could have anticipated.
In a statement issued shortly after the incident, RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar expressed the profound heartbreak shared by all members of the organization.
“We are extremely saddened by the loss of one of our family members and the injury of two others,” Kolar said. “Our immediate focus is on supporting the families of those involved and doing everything in our power to provide comfort and assistance during this incredibly painful time.”
Kolar emphasized the deeply personal nature of the tragedy, calling the deceased and injured workers more than just employees—they were respected colleagues, teammates, and friends. The names of the victims have not been released to the public out of respect for the families, who are asking for privacy as they begin to cope with this unimaginable loss.
The two injured workers remain hospitalized, and their conditions are currently being monitored closely by medical professionals. The RCOC has committed to ensuring they and their families receive every form of support necessary as they begin the long road to recovery.
In light of the tragedy, the RCOC will be offering professional grief counseling to all staff, with resources and trained specialists on site beginning tomorrow. The emotional toll of such a sudden and tragic loss has deeply impacted the RCOC workforce, and leadership is committed to ensuring every team member has the support they need during this time.
Kolar also used this moment to highlight the broader issue of work zone safety—a concern that affects highway maintenance crews across the nation.
“This devastating event is a stark reminder of the importance of work zone safety,” he said. “Our crews take every precaution to protect themselves and the public. Yet, despite their vigilance, the nature of this work carries daily risks. Today’s tragedy is a heartbreaking example of that reality.”
He continued by urging the public to remain alert and cautious when driving near construction and maintenance zones:
“Behind the safety cones and orange vests are human beings—fathers, mothers, sons, daughters—who just want to return home safely at the end of their shift. We ask all motorists to slow down, stay focused, and show the respect and awareness that every work zone demands.”
The RCOC also extended its gratitude to the Farmington Hills Police Department for their rapid and professional response to the crash. The police are actively investigating the incident to determine the cause and any contributing factors that led to this fatal collision. More information is expected to be released as the investigation unfolds.
As the community comes to terms with the heartbreaking loss, tributes have already begun to pour in from residents, partner agencies, and colleagues across Michigan’s transportation sector. Flags at RCOC facilities will be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen employee, whose commitment to public service and roadway safety will not be forgotten.
In the days ahead, the RCOC pledges to stand together, united in grief and in memory of a life tragically lost in the line of duty.
