It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Josephine Halby, a cherished member of the Farmingdale community, who tragically lost her life on July 22, 2025, at the age of 69. Josephine was fatally injured after being struck by a cement truck while crossing the street, and despite the tireless efforts of emergency responders and hospital staff, she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Josephine’s sudden and heartbreaking passing has left her family, friends, and neighbors reeling with grief. Known for her warm smile, nurturing spirit, and unwavering kindness, Josephine was more than just a resident of Farmingdale—she was a pillar of her community, a source of comfort to many, and a symbol of compassion and grace.

Born in 1956, Josephine was a lifelong Long Islander who lived with pride and purpose. She grew up in a close-knit family, the third of five siblings, and from a young age, she was known for her giving nature and protective heart. She graduated from Farmingdale High School in 1974 and went on to raise her own family in the same community where she was raised.

Josephine was the loving mother of two children, whom she raised with deep devotion and strength, often putting their needs above her own. Her children describe her as a “warrior in a world full of uncertainty,” always dependable, always present. She was also a proud grandmother of four, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond. Her grandchildren remember her as “Nana Jo,” the lady who never missed a school recital, little league game, or birthday celebration—who baked the best cookies and told the best stories.

Josephine worked for over 30 years as a school administrative assistant, where her care for the students went far beyond the paperwork. She knew every child’s name, listened patiently to their stories, and often slipped encouraging notes into lunchboxes or backpacks. Her coworkers remember her as the “heart of the school,” someone who made the front office feel like home.

Beyond her professional life, Josephine was deeply involved in community service. Whether volunteering at the local food pantry, organizing coat drives during the winter, or helping run the annual street fair, she was always first to offer her time and energy. She was also an active member of St. Kilian Parish, where she found peace, faith, and fellowship.

The tragic accident that took Josephine’s life has sent shockwaves throughout Farmingdale. Witnesses say she was doing what she had done hundreds of times before—crossing the street near her favorite bakery after picking up morning coffee—when a cement truck turning onto Main Street struck her. Emergency services responded immediately, and she was rushed to the hospital, but the injuries were too severe. The community is still grappling with the suddenness and senselessness of the loss.

In the days following her death, tributes have poured in. Flowers now line the corner where the accident occurred. Former students, neighbors, friends, and even strangers who read her story have shared memories and condolences. A memorial vigil is being planned in her honor later this week in the village square.

Josephine Halby is survived by her children, Michael Halby and Angela Torres, her grandchildren, Lucas, Ava, Matteo, and Grace, her siblings, Eleanor, Thomas, and Richard, and countless extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Halby, whom she lovingly referred to as her “forever partner,” and her parents, Anthony and Marie Bellini.

Her life was one defined by humility, warmth, and selflessness. Though taken too soon, her memory will live on in every person she touched, every child she helped, and every act of kindness done in her name.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Kilian Church on Saturday, July 26th, at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Pinelawn Memorial Park. A public visitation will be held on Friday, July 25th, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home in Farmingdale.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Long Island Cares or Safe Streets New York, in Josephine’s memory.
