In Loving Memory of Nuno: A Heartbreaking Loss
This past weekend, our family was shaken to its core by a devastating tragedy—one that words alone could never fully express. My youngest brother, Nuno, lost his long and quiet battle with mental and emotional illness by taking his own life. 💔 His passing has left a gaping hole in our hearts and lives, and we are reeling from the pain of this unbearable loss.
Nuno was more than just a brother—he was a light in our lives. He was funny, kind-hearted, thoughtful, and deeply compassionate, often putting others’ needs ahead of his own even as he struggled silently with inner battles that few truly saw. His smile could light up a room, and his laugh was the kind that stayed with you. He had dreams, hopes, and a soul that was beautiful and sensitive in ways the world couldn’t always understand.
For those who loved him, it’s hard to comprehend how someone so loved, so cherished, could reach a place where the pain became too much to bear. But mental illness can be cruel and silent. It often hides behind smiles, behind “I’m okay,” and “I’m just tired.” We were unaware of the depth of his suffering, and now we are left heartbroken, shattered, and full of questions that may never be answered.
Our family is broken once again. We’ve faced pain before, but this grief is unlike any other. Losing Nuno in this way has pierced us deeply. The sorrow is heavy, and the silence left in his absence is deafening. There is no roadmap for this kind of mourning—no way to prepare for the kind of emptiness that follows the loss of someone so young, so vibrant, and so deeply loved.
In the next few days, I’ll be traveling to Florida to be with our dad, Nuno’s mother, and our sisters. We’ll gather to hold each other through this nightmare, to remember his life, to grieve, and somehow, begin the journey toward healing. We will lean on each other in our pain, and cling to the memory of who Nuno was before the darkness took hold. He deserves to be remembered for his heart, not just his struggle.
To everyone reading this: please, hold your loved ones close. Check on your strong friends, your quiet siblings, your cheerful co-workers. Mental illness doesn’t always look how we expect it to. And for those suffering in silence—please know that you are not alone. You are loved, seen, and your life matters more than you may ever realize.
Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We are holding on to one another, leaning into faith, and trusting that somehow, with time and love, we will carry on with Nuno in our hearts forever.
Rest in Peace, Nuno. 🕊️🙏❤️
You were loved more than you knew. You will be missed more than words can say.
Forever our brother. Forever in our hearts.
