BREAKING OVERNIGHT: Man Found Dead Following Shooting in North St. Louis
St. Louis, MO — July 18, 2025 — A tragic and violent episode unfolded overnight in North St. Louis, leaving a community rattled and authorities scrambling for answers. Just after midnight, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting gunfire in the 5200 block of Wabada Avenue, a quiet residential stretch tucked within the Kingsway West neighborhood.
Responding officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department arrived on the scene minutes later to find a man lying unresponsive on the sidewalk near the curb. Despite rapid life-saving efforts by first responders and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification, is believed to be a man in his late 20s to early 30s. According to early reports, he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Investigators were seen canvassing the area, collecting shell casings, photographing the scene, and speaking with shaken residents who had been startled awake by the sound of gunfire.
“There were five or six loud pops — I thought it was fireworks at first,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “But then I looked outside and saw the flashing lights and knew something bad had happened.”
No suspects have been arrested as of early Friday morning, and the motive remains unclear. Detectives with the department’s Homicide Division have taken over the investigation and are working to determine whether the shooting was targeted or a random act of violence.
Authorities have also not confirmed whether any security footage from nearby homes or businesses captured the incident. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“We need the community’s help to bring justice to this man’s family,” a police spokesperson stated at a press briefing around 3:00 a.m. “We know someone saw or heard something. Even the smallest tip can help us piece together what happened.”
This marks yet another heartbreaking incident in a city that has struggled with persistent gun violence. As of mid-July, St. Louis has seen a troubling rise in homicides, prompting renewed calls for both legislative action and community-based intervention programs.
Local activist and anti-violence advocate Carla Simmons expressed frustration over the ongoing crisis: “We’re tired of waking up to this. Tired of seeing young men lose their lives in our streets. This isn’t just a policing issue — this is about resources, opportunity, and people caring for one another.”
A makeshift memorial of candles, flowers, and handwritten notes began to form on the sidewalk by sunrise. Neighbors, friends, and family members gathered quietly, many wiping away tears and consoling one another. Several remained on the scene through the morning, hoping to make sense of the loss and offer support to the grieving family.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to call their Homicide Division directly or provide anonymous tips through CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.
This is a developing story. More details will be provided as they become available.
