Tragedy on A76: Fatal Collision Claims Life of 14-Year-Old Pedestrian Near Hurlford, Ayrshire

A wave of shock and sorrow has swept through the Ayrshire community following a devastating road traffic incident that claimed the life of a young pedestrian. Road Policing officers are urgently appealing for information as they investigate the fatal crash, which occurred around 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, at the bridge over Cessnock Water on the A76 near Hurlford.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene following reports of a serious collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Despite the best efforts of first responders, the 14-year-old boy was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and are currently being supported by specially trained officers during this unimaginable time of loss.

The vehicle involved in the incident was a Vauxhall Corsa. The male driver and his two passengers were assessed by paramedics at the scene but did not require hospital treatment. Investigators have confirmed that none of the vehicle occupants sustained serious injuries.

Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit is now carrying out a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Officers have cordoned off the area and carried out initial scene assessments, with forensics teams working alongside collision reconstruction experts to gather vital evidence.

Inspector Andrew Thomson of the Road Policing Division made a direct appeal to the public:

“We are conducting extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this tragic incident, and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward. We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage or who was travelling on the A76 near the bridge over Cessnock Water around the time of the collision.”

The loss of such a young life has deeply affected the local community. Many in Hurlford and the wider East Ayrshire region have expressed their condolences online, with some leaving flowers and tributes near the scene in memory of the boy. Several local schools and youth organisations have also reached out to offer support and counseling services for those affected.

The A76 was closed for several hours while investigations were carried out, leading to significant traffic disruption. Police thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the closure and reiterated that the road has now reopened.

Authorities continue to urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information—no matter how minor it may seem—to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2567 of 16 July 2025.
