BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department has announced the arrest of four individuals in connection with a violent shootout that took place on the evening of Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Woodlawn High School. The incident, which unfolded around 7:00 p.m., sent shockwaves through the community and has sparked renewed concerns about youth violence and public safety in school zones.
According to officials, the East Precinct officers were initially dispatched to Woodlawn High School, located at 5620 1st Avenue North, after receiving multiple reports of gunfire in the area. These 911 calls were quickly followed by a ShotSpotter alert—a gunshot detection system that pinpointed the gunfire’s exact location on school grounds.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a chaotic and dangerous scene. Multiple gunmen had reportedly exchanged gunfire in what law enforcement believes was a targeted confrontation between rival groups. Thankfully, no students were on campus at the time due to summer break, and no injuries were immediately reported among bystanders. However, the sheer number of shell casings found at the scene painted a grim picture of the intensity and scale of the shootout.
In the immediate aftermath, the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (S.E.T.) was activated and rapidly launched a coordinated response. Through a combination of surveillance footage, witness interviews, and forensic evidence recovered at the scene, detectives were able to quickly identify four individuals suspected of being directly involved in the shooting.
Within 48 hours, S.E.T. officers executed multiple arrest warrants across the city. All four suspects—whose identities have not yet been released due to the ongoing investigation—were taken into custody without incident. Charges are expected to include reckless endangerment, illegal possession of firearms, firing into an occupied building, and attempted murder. Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges as the case develops.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond addressed the public during a press conference on Wednesday, July 16, stating:
“This type of brazen gun violence—especially on or near school property—will not be tolerated. Our officers responded with professionalism and urgency, and I commend the outstanding work done by our East Precinct and Special Enforcement Team in bringing these suspects into custody so swiftly. We are thankful no lives were lost, but we remain deeply concerned about the continuing trend of youth-related gun violence in our communities.”
Chief Thurmond further emphasized the importance of community involvement in preventing future tragedies, urging anyone with information about illegal firearms or potential acts of violence to come forward anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.
The Birmingham City Schools system also released a statement in response to the incident, reassuring families that campus security remains a top priority.
“Though school was not in session, we are deeply disturbed by what occurred at Woodlawn High School. We are working closely with BPD to enhance our safety protocols and ensure our campuses are secure at all times,” the statement read.
Woodlawn High School, a historic institution with deep roots in the Birmingham community, has previously dealt with issues related to off-campus violence, but residents say this incident feels especially alarming. Parents and local leaders have since called for increased patrols, more after-school programming, and stronger community outreach to steer young people away from gang activity and firearms.
As of now, the investigation remains active. Police are continuing to review surveillance footage and forensic evidence, and they have not ruled out the involvement of additional suspects. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Birmingham Police Department at 205-254-1764, or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
The community remains on edge but cautiously optimistic, hopeful that swift justice and increased vigilance can prevent future violence. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, but the underlying issues—poverty, gang affiliations, and access to firearms—remain complex and require broader community and governmental engagement to address effectively.
